The Power of Collaboration — Why 1 + 1 Can Equal Infinity

Peter Hartzell • August 1, 2025

For years, I thought I had to figure everything out on my own. As a business owner, it’s easy to fall into the mindset that you have to carry the whole load yourself. But the truth is, none of us builds anything meaningful without help. Every big step forward in Tree House Media’s story has happened because of collaboration.

When I think back to the early days, certain people stand out. My wife Amanda gave me the encouragement to take the leap and start Tree House Media in the first place. My dad taught me the basics of marketing and business development. My first big client, Sean Kaplan, not only believed in my work but actively introduced me to people who could help me grow. Later, my business partner, Chauncy Horton, kept me steady through lean seasons and helped me think bigger about what was possible. None of those moments happened because I had all the answers. They happened because I had people alongside me.

That’s the power of collaboration. One plus one doesn’t just equal two — it multiplies impact in ways that are impossible to predict. When two people bring their strengths together, the result can feel like infinity. Opportunities open up, creativity flows, and progress accelerates.

If you’re running a business and feel like you’re carrying the load alone, here are a few practical ways to start leveraging collaboration:

1. Identify your strengths and gaps

You don’t need to be great at everything. Be honest about what you do well, and then look for people who are strong where you’re weak.

2. Build mutually beneficial relationships

The best collaborations happen when both sides bring something to the table. Look for ways you can add value to others instead of just what you can get.

3. Lean on mentors and peers

Sometimes you need advice, encouragement, or accountability. Surround yourself with people who are further along and others who are walking a similar path.

4. Partner with experts

Outsourcing isn’t weakness. It’s wisdom. Whether it’s marketing, bookkeeping, or design, bringing in experts frees you to focus on what you do best.

5. Stay open-handed

Collaboration requires humility. Don’t be afraid to share ideas, give credit, or admit you don’t know it all. That’s where growth really begins.

Tree House Media has never been a one-person operation, even though I started it. It’s been shaped by encouragement, friendships, clients, and partnerships that made the journey possible. That’s why I believe so strongly in collaboration — because I’ve seen what happens when you stop trying to do it all alone.
